Hi K-Way, how’s it going?
I can’t complain. It won’t change nothing.
Can you give us a little background on how you got interested in becoming a musician? And how did K-Way come about?
I’m a Houston rapper. I’ve been in the business for about 15 years and my music comes from life experiences so I’m considered being a storyteller. The name K-WAY came over the years because it has told me everything has to be my way (laughs) so that’s how I got the name.
What do you think is the most important aspect of writing a song?
Making sure you can paint the picture for your fans so they can see your vision.
You’re based in Houston, Texas. How is the music hip-hop/rap scene there? Do you like it?
The scene in Houston as far as hip-hop to me is that unity could be better. I love our culture but in order to make it, you have to get out of Houston because we really don’t support each other. Do I like it? No, but it is what it is.
You’re a rapper, songwriter, record producer as well as the founder and CEO of G.M.G.N Ent. How do you manage all that?
I can’t lie, it’s a challenge but when you want something bad enough, you’ll get it done. You have to prepare yourself mentally and have self-discipline. If not, it will break you. Trying to get in the industry itself is hard work but the thing is consistency and dedication and you’ll see things working out in your favor and then it becomes a little easier, not easy but a little easier.
I wanted to talk about your single “Clone Me”. What inspired you to make that song?
The way I see it is they clone things that are worthy of it, meaning you have to be talented and very good so I figure like I’m that good they might clone me meaning I’m good.
I haven’t seen music videos from you. Do you plan on releasing music videos also?
Yes, that’s in the making as we speak but I have a couple on youtube but yea, more visuals coming real soon.
What are you working on right now?
I recently dropped a mixtape beginning of Jan. Time Is Money which is out now on iTunes, Spotify, Google Play and much more of the music sites. As for what I’m working on now is an album trying to get it ready for this winter.
Any new releases soon?
Yes, I’m dropping a new single called (I’m On It). It’s going to be crazy. I perform it anytime I have a show and my fans response is a standing ovation.
How do you know a song is finished?
To me, it takes a few times going in the studio the first time you listen to it and you’re always going to find ways to make it better so, after maybe 3 times doing that, it should be a complete song, the way I see it
What’s your creative process like? How do you find daily motivation and inspiration?
I just put a track on and let it play, sit back for a min, let it sink in until it becomes apart of me and let it flow.
My thing is I don’t write every day to keep my brain fresh but when I do, I make at least 3 songs back to back because a lot happens in a day so when a couple days go by, you have a lot to talk about.
With the power of social media, do you think it’s much harder and more competitive to break through in the industry these days?
Yea and no, I say that because it gives us artists different avenues and platforms to make it but it also is a little harder because everyone is doing it makes it a bigger market for AR to choose from.
If you could change one thing in the music industry, what would it be?
I got to say the mumble rap because you have people with real talent and we are being looked over due to the lack of talent to get in. Before you really had to be able to produce music to get looked at, now it’s like anything goes.
Are you playing gigs and tours this year?
I’m working on that now as we speak but yea that is the plan. I love performing, it’s like a breath of fresh air it puts me in another world.
What do you wanna share with the audience and the fans?
Just stay tuned in I have a lot of big things and great music coming your way and go check out my website, subscribe to it that way you’ll be up to date on what I have going on.
